Over the course of my summer at the Transgender Law Center (TLC), I had the opportunity to hear from 152 members of the transgender community, and their friends, allies and advocates. In these conversations, I was able to answer their legal questions, point them to the resources they needed and assist them navigate legal and administrative systems to ensure that the state recognized their lived experiences. In addition, I was able to work on major priorities for TLC such as accessibility to transition-related healthcare for low-income transgender individuals and combating the pervasive employment discrimination against California’s transgender communities. Along the way, I have learned a great deal about a developing area of law and the major policy and political challenges facing the transgender community. The summer was an invaluable learning experience and a springboard to a career in the LGBT movement.
